My Own Downtown - Sue Starkey
Texas native, Sue Starkey is a well-known stylist in Downtown Rock Springs. She has been a cosmetologist for 35 years. Former owner, Nadine Wilburn recently passed the torch to Sue. The opportunity to take over ownership of Shear Reflections was overwhelming at first but according to Sue, she is "having a lot of fun."
"I'm thankful to work and own a business in Downtown," she expressed. "I hope more people will come down to shop, look around and have a good time."
Sue noted that Main Streets across America have made a great comeback.
"The transformations in the Main Street communities are delightful," Sue shared. "Families have fun in these places and they're worth touring just like our Downtown."
She added, "I appreciate the new beauty of Downtown - it's nice seeing people care so much about this area."
Before Big Boy's last arrival, visitors from New York approached Sue for a last-minute haircut since the historic train was late.
"I love getting to know the visitors in the salon," Sue mentioned. "Just like the locals, they have interesting stories to share."
Sometimes, it's difficult for older visitors to find Downtown, especially if they're not familiar with mapping technology.
Recently, Sue chatted with visitors from Colorado. They wanted to explore Downtown Rock Springs on their way to Idaho but received poor directions. Instead of giving up though, they called Bi-Rite/Sweet Sage/Remedies Grill and received better directions.
Sue went on to say, "I see people from other states park their vehicles on South Main Street and learning our history as they go on the historical self-guided walking tours. It makes me proud to be a part of this community when I see visitors enjoy Downtown."
...And that's why Downtown Rock Springs is My Own Downtown.
